Dash camera proposal for traffic cops, WA Police Union in new push

Dash cameras will be fitted inside police cars under a new proposal by traffic cops and the WA Police Union to better protect officers and gather evidence.

In a letter addressed to Karl O’Callaghan this week the union has asked for dash cameras to be fitted in all traffic enforcement group vehicles.

The hi-tech police cars are already fitted with numberplate recognition cameras on the outside, which identify unregistered cars and vehicles linked to crimes.

The union believes the dash cameras will act as another “evidence gathering tool” and will prove crucial if and when a police pursuit has to be reviewed.

The cameras will also help respond to complaints made against police, the union claims.

Dash cameras in police cars are used widely in the US but the only Australian state to use them is Victoria.
