Rottnest Island Police were patrolling Gordie Bay Settlement as part of their junior leavers Operation when they observed a group of males near Hydrolyte Loop.
Its alleged one male approached an adult quokka who was sitting in the middle of the road. The male kicked the quokka to the rear of its body causing him to travel approximately one to two meters before landing.
The male was arrested and conveyed to Rottnest Police Station.
As a result the 18 year old male from Mount Pleasant was charged with:
1x Cruelty to Animals (Animal Welfare Act) and was bailed to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court on the 23 December 2015.
He was then evicted from the Island.
Police searched for the injured Quokka but did not locate him, its unknown if his injuries were life threatening.
Officer in Charge of Rottnest Police Station Sgt Graeme Bond says “We will not tolerate any cruelty any animals on the island especially Quokkas”.
